Stand in the middle of your garage and take a full cut with a bat. Not a half-swing, not a check swing. A real one, hands finishing high, hips through the ball. Notice where the barrel wants to go. If your arms are pulling in because there's a wall or a shelving unit in the way, your kid feels that too, every single rep. That's the thing most people don't think about until the net's already hung. The length gets all the attention. It's the width that decides how your kid actually swings in there.
A bat swing isn't a straight line. It's an arc, and it needs room to open up on both sides. Room behind the hitter for the load and the takeaway, room out front for the extension where the real power lives. When a garage is too narrow, kids figure it out fast, and not in a good way. They shorten up. They tuck the elbows. They swing to fit the box instead of swinging the way they should. Do that a few hundred times and it stops being a garage problem and starts being a swing problem, one that follows them out to the field.
The good news is that a garage doesn't have to be huge to work. It has to be wide enough for the swing to breathe, and set up so the hitter is standing where the room is widest, not shoved against a side wall to make space for the car. Most standard two-car garages have more usable width than people assume. The trouble usually isn't the walls. It's everything hanging on them and everything stacked against them.
Before you fall in love with a cage size, do an honest walk of the space. The wall-to-wall number on paper and the number your kid actually swings inside are almost never the same. A workbench sticks out a foot and a half. The garage door track and the opener eat into a corner. Bikes, a lawnmower, the shelf with the paint cans, the water heater tucked into an alcove. None of that is a sign anybody's done anything wrong, it's just a garage doing its normal job. But every one of those things narrows the real lane a hitter has to work with.
So measure to the obstacles, not the walls. Then picture a right-handed hitter and a left-handed one both standing in there, because a switch of the batter's box moves the whole swing to the other side of the room. If you've got kids who hit from different sides, the space has to hold both. That single detail changes cage placement more than almost anything else, and it's the kind of thing that's easy to miss when you're excited and just want the net up by the weekend.
Width is the one people forget, so it's the one worth hammering. But it works together with the other two dimensions, not instead of them. You need ceiling height for the finish of the swing and for a machine to throw a real ball, and you need depth for the ball to travel and for a hitter to see it and react. A cage that's plenty wide but too short front to back turns hitting into a cramped, rushed thing, and a kid can't work on timing when the ball's on them the second it leaves the tee or the machine.
The reason a real training setup feels different from a net strung across the rafters is that all three dimensions got respected at once. The hitter stands in the widest part, the ball has room to come and go, and the swing finishes clean. That's the environment doing the work. Your kid stops managing the space and just hits. This is the part people are surprised by. A garage that feels too tight to one family is a real project to us, and it usually isn't as tight as it looks. We've walked into plenty of garages where the owner had already decided it wouldn't work, and the fix was a foldable cage that tucks up out of the way when the car comes back in, or netting and a tee positioned so the widest usable lane becomes the batter's box instead of an afterthought against the wall.
The move that matters is planning the space around the swing first, then fitting the cage to it, instead of buying a cage off a number and hoping the swing survives. Sometimes that means a stationary setup because you've got a spot that's always the hitting spot. Sometimes it's a foldable system because the garage still has to be a garage on weekdays. Either way, the width of the room, the real width after we account for the door track and the workbench and which side your kid hits from, is what tells us which one's right. We'd rather figure that out with you before anything gets ordered than after.
If you take one thing into the garage with you, let it be this. Don't measure for the biggest net that fits. Measure for the fullest swing your kid can take without pulling in. Have them stand in the spot you're thinking about and take three real cuts, both hands finishing, and watch their shoulders. If they stay loose and the arms extend, you've got your box. If they shrink to fit, the box needs to move or open up before the cage goes in.
That's the whole difference between a net in the garage and a place your kid actually wants to hit in every night after dinner. The room decides the swing. Get the width right, and the rest is just letting them put in the work.
