You've got one lane in the garage, a tee in the corner, and a pitching machine you'd love to run without dragging half the setup around every time you switch. That's the whole puzzle, and it's a good one to solve, because the answer is mostly about where the L-screen lives so it protects the feeder during machine reps and stays out of the way during tee work. Get that one placement right and the same lane does double duty in the same session.
Here's the way I think about it.
Your L-screen has one job during machine reps: it protects whoever is loading the ball. So the screen belongs down at the machine end of the lane, angled so the person feeding sits behind it while the ball comes out the cutout. That's true whether you're running an arm-style machine or a wheel-style one. The feeder tucks in behind the padded upright, the arm swings or the wheels spin through the opening, and the person putting balls in is shielded the whole time.
The mistake I see people talk themselves into is centering the L-screen on the hitter, like it's there to guard the batter. It isn't. The batter is protected by the net around the lane. The L-screen guards the loader. Once you set it by the machine and forget about the hitter's end, the placement gets simple.
Now, keep it a few feet off the machine, not jammed against it. You want room to reach the feeder, adjust the feed rate, and grab a ball off the floor without stepping out from behind the screen. A screen shoved right up on the machine forces you to lean around it, which defeats the point.
The reason this placement works for a shared lane is that tee reps live at the opposite end, up by the hitter. When your kid rolls the tee out for a quick round, the L-screen is already parked down by the machine, out of the swing path, out of the follow-through, out of the way entirely. Nobody moves it. The tee comes out, the reps happen, the tee goes back.
That's the whole win. One lane, two kinds of work, and the only thing that changes between them is whether the machine is on. No hauling the screen back and forth. No resetting the lane. If you've read what I've written about making the tee a ten-second start instead of a ten-minute chore, this is the same idea applied to the screen: the less you have to move, the more reps actually happen.
Give yourself a clear line where tee work ends and machine territory begins. Roughly, the front two-thirds of the lane is the hitter's zone for both tee and live reps, and the back third is machine and screen. Keep the screen behind that line and the two never fight each other.
People obsess over how far back to set the screen. The angle matters more. You want the L-screen turned slightly so the loader's body is fully behind the tall upright and the cutout faces down the lane toward the hitter. A screen sitting flat and square to the lane leaves the feeder's arm or shoulder exposed on the reach. A slight angle tucks everything behind the padding.
Once the angle's right, distance is mostly about comfort. Close enough to load without stretching, far enough that the ball has cleared the machine before it passes the cutout. You'll feel the sweet spot in the first few feeds. When loading feels natural and no part of you is poking out past the upright, you've found it.
The opening in the L-screen needs to sit where the ball actually exits, and that's a machine-by-machine thing. An arm-style machine releases higher on the swing. A wheel-style machine sends it out at wheel height. Set the machine first, watch where the ball comes out, then position the screen so that path runs clean through the cutout without clipping the netting or the frame.
For tee work this matters not at all, which is exactly why we set it for the machine. Set the height for the harder job, and the easier job takes care of itself.
